In 2017 I hiked the Continental Divide Trail in the US. In New Mexico I took an alternate route from the official trail that followed the stunning Gila river. It was an adventurous section, involving hundreds of fords of the river and a lot of bushwhacking on the washed out and overgrown banks, but above all it was exceptionally beautiful and serene.
This painting is based on a photo I took looking up through a shady crack in the towering canyon walls as they glowed pink and orange in the sunlight. I loved the contrast of light and the idea of this half hidden, inaccessible world rarely touched by the sun.
The Gila is available to buy from my Etsy shop.
