In 2017 I hiked the Continental Divide Trail. Snow lingered on the high passes in the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. The hiking was slow going – and at times a little sketchy – but the scenery was epic and adventurous. The days were bright and sunny and by late June only patches of snow remained. But as summer finally appeared it came pierced with dramatic daily afternoon thunderstorms to contend with.
This painting is based on a photo I took when hiking high up on the ridge, looking at the trail ahead as dark clouds hanging over the peaks ahead heralded the coming change from that morning’s bright clear blue skies.
